Dog bed sizes

Measure your dog stretched out asleep, nose to base of tail, and add 6 to 12 inches. Dogs that sprawl need the bigger number; dogs that curl can take the smaller one.

Every size is soft enough to fit inside a standard crate of the matching size, even where the crate runs a little smaller. If your dog is between sizes, or the bed has to fit a particular nook, custom sizes are a normal request.

Hemp or cotton duck

Both covers are heavyweight, zippered and machine washable. Hemp is naturally antimicrobial, so the cover holds odor less between washes, and it gets softer with every wash instead of thinning. Cotton duck is tightly woven upholstery canvas that shrugs off circling, digging and scratching. Pick hemp for a dog that smells like a dog; pick duck for a dog that treats the bed like a construction site. Both breathe, which is why neither runs hot the way a plastic-backed bed does.

Foam or latex

Shredded CertiPUR-US foam is lighter, conforms to however the dog lies, and is the one to pick for a young dog or a bed that moves between rooms. Organic latex holds its shape under weight instead of slowly flattening, doesn't trap heat, and resists dust mites. That makes it the better choice for senior dogs, giant breeds and anything with stiff joints. Latex is offered on the hemp beds; the cotton beds come with foam.

What washable means here

The cover unzips and goes in the washer on cold, then air-dries or tumbles low. The foam insert doesn't go in the washer; spot-clean it and let it dry fully. For dogs that come in wet, leak, or are recovering from surgery, add the waterproof liner between the insert and the cover.

Outdoor use

These aren't weatherproof beds. On a covered porch or in a garage they're fine, especially with the waterproof liner, but left in rain the cover will soak through and the foam will hold water. If you want a bed for the yard, we'd rather tell you that than sell you one.

Frequently asked questions

What size dog bed does a Labrador need?

Large (42 x 28) for most Labs. Go X-Large if yours sleeps fully stretched out or is on the heavy side.

Are these dog beds machine washable?

The cover is. The foam or latex insert is spot-clean only. Covers are also sold on their own, so a shredded cover doesn't mean a new bed.

Which bed is best for an older dog with arthritis?

The hemp bed with organic latex. It's firmer and more consistent than foam, so the dog doesn't sink through to the floor, and it holds that support for years.

Do you sell replacement covers?

Yes, in hemp or cotton, all seven sizes. Most people order one when the original wears out or when they want a different color.

Are they chew-proof?

No fabric bed is. Hemp is the toughest natural fiber we've found, but a dog that's decided to destroy a bed will destroy it.
