Kapok Pillows

Kapok is the silky fiber from the seed pods of the kapok tree, and it's the closest plant-based thing to down: light, lofty and soft, with no feathers and no animal. Every kapok pillow here has an organic cotton shell and is stuffed in Chicago, from bed pillows and neck rolls to the Sleeping Bean body pillow and throw pillow inserts. There's loose organic kapok fiber too if you'd rather fill your own.

What kapok feels like

Fluffed up, a kapok pillow is as lofty as down and lighter than poly fiber. It compresses under your head rather than pushing back, which is why down sleepers like it, and it breathes, so it doesn't build heat the way poly does. It's naturally water-resistant and inhospitable to dust mites, which makes it a good choice for allergy sufferers who can't use feathers. Harvesting doesn't cut the tree; the pods are collected after they fall.

Kapok, buckwheat or latex

Kapok is the soft option. Buckwheat is firm and holds a shape; latex is springy and resilient. If you sleep on your stomach or like sinking into a pillow, kapok. If you need your neck held in one position all night, buckwheat.

Which kapok pillow

Keeping the loft

Kapok settles with use. Fluff the pillow every morning like you would down, and when it's lower than you like, unzip and add a handful of fill. Don't put kapok in the washer: wet fiber clumps and stays clumped. Wash the shell, sun the fill. Details in how to wash a kapok pillow and are kapok pillows good.

Frequently asked questions

What is kapok?

A plant fiber from the seed pods of the kapok (ceiba) tree. It's hollow, buoyant and silky, and it's been used to stuff pillows and life jackets for over a century.

Is kapok hypoallergenic?

Yes. It's naturally resistant to dust mites and mold, and it's the usual alternative for people allergic to feathers.

Does a kapok pillow flatten?

It settles like down does. Daily fluffing keeps the loft; topping up with fill restores it.

Can you wash a kapok pillow?

Wash the cover, not the fill. Kapok clumps when wet.

Is kapok vegan?

Yes. No animal products, and no trees are cut to harvest it.
