A zabuton meditation cushion does one job and does it well. It puts a layer of soft, natural padding between your knees, ankles, and the floor. Without it, even a short sit on a hard surface becomes uncomfortable. With it, you stop thinking about your legs and start focusing on your practice. Every zabuton in this collection is filled with natural cotton batting, hand-tufted to stay evenly padded, and available in cotton, organic cotton, or hemp. Two sizes available. All made in Chicago since 1987.

What Does a Zabuton Meditation Cushion Actually Do?

Most people come to a zabuton after trying to meditate directly on the floor. The floor feels fine for a few minutes. Then the ankles start aching. The knees press harder. You start shifting instead of sitting. The discomfort takes over.

A zabuton floor cushion removes that distraction. It sits flat on the floor and provides a soft, stable base under your entire lower body. Your knees, shins, and ankles rest on padding instead of bare hardwood or tile. The mat also insulates your legs from cold floors during winter or early-morning sessions when the floor is still cold.

It works on its own as a meditation mat. It also works as the base layer under a zafu or a meditation bench. In either case, the job is the same: protect your joints and keep you comfortable long enough to actually meditate.

Standard Size vs Large Zabuton Floor Cushion: Which Do You Need?

Every zabuton in this collection comes in two sizes. Getting the right size makes a real difference in how comfortable your sits feel.

Standard Size: 24 x 24 x 2 Inches

The standard zabuton is 24 inches square and 2 inches thick. It fits most sitting positions for adults of average height and build. Enough surface area for cross-legged sitting with a zafu on top. A good fit for smaller meditation spaces, travel, or practitioners who want a more compact mat.

Large Size: 32 x 26 x 3 Inches

The large zabuton is 32 inches wide, 26 inches deep, and 3 inches thick. The extra inch of thickness adds more cushioning under your legs. The wider surface gives your knees more room, which matters for taller practitioners or anyone who sits with a wider stance. If you sit cross-legged with your knees spread wide, or kneel with your feet extended behind you, the large size gives your legs the room they need.

  • Standard 24x24: compact, good for most adults and smaller spaces.
  • Large 32x26: more coverage for taller bodies or wider sitting stances.
  • Both sizes: available in cotton, hemp, and organic cotton.

Which Zabuton Fabric Is Right for Your Practice?

All three zabutons use the same hand-tufted cotton batting fill. The cover fabric is what sets them apart.

Cotton Zabuton

The Cotton Zabuton uses a soft cotton canvas cover. It is the most accessible option in this collection. Cotton feels smooth against bare skin and breathes well during seated practice. Available in standard and large sizes across a range of colors. A practical, everyday zabuton mat for practitioners of any level.

Organic Cotton Zabuton

The Organic Cotton Zabuton uses GOTS-certified fabric. That means no synthetic pesticides in the growing process and no chemical treatments in the finished cover. For practitioners who care about what their skin is in contact with during daily sits, the organic cotton version is the right choice. It has the same soft feel as standard cotton, with a cleaner supply chain.

Hemp Zabuton

The Hemp Zabuton uses 17 oz. hemp canvas with a recycled cotton interior fill. Hemp is the most durable cover in this collection. It holds its structure through years of daily use, softens with each wash, and does not thin or wear the same way cotton can over time. The recycled cotton batting inside reduces waste without compromising the padding. The hemp zabuton is the best long-term investment in this collection for daily practitioners.

What Is Inside a Zabuton and Why Does It Matter?

Every zabuton in this collection is filled with natural cotton batting and hand tufted. Both of those details matter more than most buyers realize before they sit on one.

Cotton batting is a soft, dense material made from natural cotton fibers. It provides even, consistent cushioning across the whole mat. It does not shift or compress to one side the way loose-fill materials can. It insulates well from cold floors and stays comfortable through long sessions without getting warm or trapping heat the way foam can.

Hand tufting is what keeps the batting in place. Each zabuton is stitched through at regular intervals to anchor the batting to the cover. Without tufting, the batting migrates to the edges over time, leaving you sitting on a thin, unpadded center. A hand-tufted zabuton cushion stays evenly padded session after session, wash after wash.

How to Use a Zabuton Cushion in Your Practice

Most people use a zabuton as the base layer under a zafu or meditation bench. But there are a few different ways to use one depending on your practice.

  • Under a zafu: place the zabuton flat on the floor, set the zafu on top, and sit cross-legged. Your knees and ankles rest on the zabuton while the zafu lifts your hips.
  • Under a meditation bench: set the zabuton flat and place the bench on top. Your knees and shins rest on the padded mat during kneeling practice.
  • Alone as a meditation mat: sit directly on the zabuton without a zafu for low-profile floor sitting. Good for practitioners with good hip flexibility who do not need extra lift.
  • As a yoga knee pad: fold the zabuton or use it flat under your knees during kneeling yoga poses. The cotton batting is soft enough to protect your knees on hard floors.
  • General floor seating: use it in any space where you sit on the floor, whether reading, stretching, or practicing breathing.

How to Care for Your Zabuton Mat

All covers are removable and machine washable. This keeps your zabuton fresh through daily use without any complicated care routine.

Cotton and Organic Cotton Covers

  • Unzip and remove the cover from the mat.
  • Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle.
  • Air dry or tumble dry low. No high heat.
  • No bleach on any cover fabric.

Hemp Covers

  • Same care steps as cotton covers.
  • Hemp softens slightly with each wash, which improves the feel over time.

Interior Batting

  • The cotton batting does not need to be washed between cover washes.
  • After washing the cover, reshape and fluff the batting before putting the cover back on.
  • Store the zabuton flat in a dry space to keep the batting evenly distributed.

Why Our Zabuton Meditation Cushion Is Built to Last

Every zabuton in this collection is cut, filled, tufted, and sewn at our Chicago shop. We use natural, organic materials because the people who sit on these cushions care about what they are made of. The cotton batting is natural. The organic cotton cover is GOTS certified. The hemp canvas is upholstery grade.

Most zabuton floor cushions sold online are made to hit a price point. The batting is thin. The covers are synthetic. They flatten within a year of daily use. Our zabuton meditation cushion is built the other way. Thicker batting, stronger covers, hand-tufted construction that holds its shape through years of regular washing and daily sitting.
