Most chairs decide how you sit. A bean bag lets you decide, then lets you change your mind twenty minutes later. That's the whole appeal, and it's why these work for reading, gaming, and long stretches of doing nothing in particular better than furniture with a frame does.
Every chair in this collection is cut, filled, and stitched in our Chicago shop, in organic cotton, hemp, cotton, or marine-grade vinyl. No polyester, no microfiber, nothing synthetic against your skin. All of them ship pre-filled, so there's no wrestling with a bag of beads on your living room floor the day it arrives.
Choosing Your Fabric
Fabric is the first decision, and it's mostly a question of where the chair will live.
Organic cotton is soft, breathable, and GOTS-certified. It's the right pick for bedrooms, nurseries, and anyone who reacts to chemical finishes. The organic cotton lounger is the version most people mean when they ask for a natural bean bag chair, and the rest of the range is in organic cotton bean bag chairs.
Hemp is the most durable natural fabric we work with. The hemp bean bag chair uses an 18 oz canvas weave that holds its structure through years of daily use and softens with every wash instead of wearing thin. If the chair is going in a high-traffic living room, this is the one. Browse all hemp bean bag chairs.
Cotton is the everyday option — casual, comfortable, easy to clean, and available in the widest range of colors. The cotton lounger suits living rooms and playrooms where the chair will get used hard but not punished. See the full cotton bean bag chairs range.
Marine-grade vinyl is the only fabric here rated for outdoors. It's waterproof and UV-resistant, wipes clean with a damp cloth, and doesn't care about spills, pollen, or a wet swimsuit. The marine-grade vinyl bean bag chair is what you want for a patio, deck, or poolside, and there are more in vinyl bean bag chairs.
Superfill and Eco Superfill
You pick the fill at checkout. Both are a blend rather than plain beads, and that blend is the reason these hold up.
Superfill is 80% recycled EPS beads and 20% foam. It feels soft and conforming, it moves with you as you shift position, and it suits casual lounging and lighter daily use.
Eco Superfill is 80% recycled EPS beads and 20% natural latex foam. It's slightly firmer and more resilient. Latex resists compression better than foam does, so it holds its shape longer under daily use and gives more consistent support to your lower back and hips.
The reason we don't sell a bead-only chair is that bead-only chairs flatten. The beads compress, migrate to the edges, and within a year you're sitting on the floor with a bag around you. The foam component is what stops that from happening.
Sizing: Lounger or Loveseat
Bean bags take up less room than people expect. The lounger occupies about the same floor space as a standard armchair, and unlike an armchair you can pick it up and move it out of the way.
The solo lounger fits one adult comfortably and comes in cotton, organic cotton, and hemp. For most people this is the right starting point, and it works in bedrooms, reading corners, living rooms, and small apartments.
The bean bag loveseat seats two adults, or gives one person room to stretch out completely. It needs more floor space, and it functions as a soft alternative to a sofa rather than as a chair.
In a small room, put the bag near a wall — the wall doubles as a backrest if the fill shifts while you're in it. Neutral fabric colors keep the space feeling open. And if you're unsure, start with the single lounger. Going up to the loveseat later is easier than discovering you've filled the room.
Caring for Your Chair
Every fabric cover is removable. That's deliberate, and it's most of the reason these last.
Cotton and organic cotton go in the machine on a gentle cycle, cold water, mild detergent, then air-dry or tumble on low. Hemp is the same, and it comes out a little softer each time. Vinyl doesn't need washing at all — wipe it down with a damp cloth, use mild soap on stubborn spots, and let it dry before use.
Skip bleach, fabric softener, and high heat on all of them. Fluff and rotate the chair every so often to redistribute the fill and keep flat spots from forming, and keep it somewhere dry, since moisture makes bead fill clump. More care detail is on our frequently asked questions page.
Refilling Instead of Replacing
Fill compresses. It happens to every bean bag, and it's not a defect — it's the fill doing its job under your weight for a couple thousand hours.
When the chair starts feeling softer than you want it, add more. Bean bag fill is sold separately, and you can top up with the same fill or switch to the other one if you'd rather have a firmer seat. Our fill calculator will tell you roughly how much you need, and there are step-by-step instructions in how to refill a bean bag chair.
If the cover wears out before the fill does, replace just the cover. We stock bean bag chair covers separately for exactly this reason. Between refills and cover swaps, there's no version of this where the whole chair goes in a dumpster after two years.
Made in Chicago Since 1987
Every chair in this collection is made at our shop on South Western Avenue. Seams are double-needle stitched to handle adult weight without splitting, and the panelled construction is what gives the chair shape instead of letting it slump into a puddle.
The comparison worth making is with what's sold everywhere else: overseas manufacturing, synthetic covers, undisclosed bead-only fill, thin fabric, built to a price rather than a standard. Those chairs flatten within a year and can't be refilled or recovered when they do. See the rest of our bean bag furniture if you want the full range.
Are Adult Bean Bag Chairs Good for Back Support?
Yes, when the fill is a bead-and-foam blend rather than beads alone. The foam component supports your lower back and hips while still adapting to your body, which is the combination a rigid chair can't offer and a cheap bean bag loses within months. There's a longer discussion in are bean bags bad for your back. If you're dealing with a chronic back condition, talk to a healthcare professional about what kind of seating suits it — that's not a question a product page can answer for you.
What Is the Best Filling for an Adult Bean Bag Chair?
A blend of recycled EPS beads and foam. Beads alone give you the initial softness and none of the longevity. Adding foam to the mix keeps the chair supportive as it ages. Between our two, natural latex holds its shape longer than standard foam, so Eco Superfill is the better choice if the chair will see heavy daily use.
How Long Do Adult Bean Bag Chairs Last?
Years, with basic care. The variables are fill quality, cover fabric, and whether you can service the thing. Fluffing regularly and topping up the fill when it softens keeps a chair comfortable well past the point where a sealed, bead-only chair would have been thrown out. Hemp covers in particular outlast the fill inside them.
What Size Bean Bag Chair Should an Adult Buy?
The standard lounger suits most adults. Go up to the loveseat if you want to seat two people, or if you specifically want to lie down fully rather than sit. Floor space is the real constraint — measure where it's going before you decide, because the loveseat wants noticeably more room than the lounger does.
Are Bean Bag Chairs Better Than Traditional Chairs for Relaxing?
For relaxing, often yes. A bean bag conforms to whatever position you're in and moves when you move, which is why they suit reading, gaming, and watching films better than a chair that holds you at one angle. For working at a desk, a proper task chair is still the right tool. Plenty of people keep both and use each for what it's good at.
Can Adult Bean Bag Chairs Be Refilled?
Yes, all of them. Fill is sold separately and adding more restores the support without replacing anything else. This is the main practical difference between our chairs and a sealed bean bag — when a sealed chair goes flat, that's the end of it.
