What non-toxic means on this page

Three specific things, because the phrase gets used loosely.

  • The cover is GOTS certified. That's the organic textile standard: cotton grown without synthetic pesticides and processed without the finishes, bleaches and heavy-metal dyes that conventional textiles allow.
  • The fill is inert. Recycled bead is a stable, closed-cell material that doesn't off-gas the way polyurethane foam does. It's sealed in a liner you don't need to open.
  • Nothing is sprayed on. No chemical flame retardants, which is the additive most parents are trying to avoid in soft furniture.

The certifications and what they cover are laid out in are bean bag chairs safe.

Organic cotton or hemp

Both are natural fiber with nothing added. Hemp is grown with almost no pesticides by nature and is far tougher, but the hemp covers aren't GOTS certified. Organic cotton is the choice when the certificate matters; hemp when durability does.

Why not vinyl

Vinyl is PVC. It's the right fabric for a patio and the wrong one for a household avoiding plastics. If wipe-clean is the priority, it's in vinyl bean bag chairs; it just isn't here.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a bean bag chair non-toxic?

A cover without chemical finishes, fill that doesn't off-gas, and no flame-retardant treatment. Ours meet all three; the cover is GOTS certified.

Are the beads safe?

They're recycled, inert and sealed in a liner. They're a choking hazard loose, like any small object, which is why the liner stays closed.

Does it off-gas or smell new?

No. There's no foam and no vinyl; it smells like cotton.

Is organic cotton worth the extra cost over regular cotton?

If the certificate matters to you, yes. The chair is otherwise the same construction.
