About Our Fill Materials

Choosing the right fill makes all the difference in comfort, support, and longevity. Use our calculators below to estimate how much you need, but keep in mind these are estimates only — fill behaves differently depending on density, compressibility, and intended use. When in doubt, contact us.

Available Fill Types

  • Polystyrene Beads – Classic bean bag fill. Lightweight and supportive. Sold in 2 ft³ bags. Ideal for bean bags and large cushions.
  • EcoFill – Blend of 80% beads and 20% shredded latex. Adds durability and a bit more weight compared to pure beads.
  • SuperFill – Blend of 80% beads and 20% shredded foam. Soft but supportive, perfect for bean bags needing extra comfort.
  • Buckwheat Hulls – Dense and firm. Great for meditation cushions, zafus, and smaller support pillows. Requires full volume or more for seating.
  • Millet Hulls – Slightly lighter than buckwheat with a smoother feel. Good for pillows and cushions where moldability matters.
  • Kapok Fiber – Natural, fluffy, compressible fiber. Best for head pillows or light back support, not for seating (compresses heavily).
  • Shredded Latex – Dense, springy, heavier fill. Works well in cushions and pillows but can get very heavy in larger volumes.
  • Shredded Foam – Soft, lightweight, and bouncy. Great for back/arm cushions but compresses too much for heavy seating without doubling the volume.
  • Hemp Fiber – Similar to kapok: natural, fluffy, and compressible. Better for pillows and light use than for seats.
  • Hemp Herd (Animal Bedding) – Granular fill similar to millet. Can be used for smaller cushions, but not recommended for large seating items.

How Much to Buy

  • Bean Bag Chairs – Typically filled to about 40–50% of total container volume. Beads, EcoFill, or SuperFill recommended.
  • Seating / Ottomans / Cushions – Plan for at least 100% of the container volume with dense fills (buckwheat, millet, beads). Double the volume if using foam, latex, or kapok.
  • Back / Arm / Body Support – Usually 80–100% of container volume. Kapok, latex, or foam are best; millet/buckwheat can work with a slightly looser fill (~80–90%).
  • Head Pillows – Kapok, latex, foam, millet, or buckwheat at about 100% volume (slightly less if you prefer softer feel).
  • Decorative Use – Fill fully, but compressibility is less critical. Kapok, foam, or hemp fiber are great options.

Using the Calculators

Our fill calculators let you estimate by shape and dimensions or by known container volume. Enter your numbers, choose your fill type, and the calculator will estimate how much you need — adjusting for compressibility and intended use. If results seem unrealistic (very high weights or volumes), we may recommend lighter fills like beads or blends.

These are best-effort estimates. Every project is unique — use this tool as a guide, and contact us if you’re unsure.

How Much Fill Should I Buy?

Choose a fill type, pick your intended use, then estimate volume by shape or enter a custom volume. We’ll set a starting % for you—you can adjust.

Beads/Eco/Super are shown in ft³; other fills show lbs.
We set ~50% as a typical starting point for bean bag chairs; adjust for your preferred firmness.
