Buckwheat vs. Kapok: Which Fill Is Right for You?

Updated on Oct 12, 2026

Buckwheat hulls provide a firm, moldable feel. Kapok is a soft, lightweight plant fiber with a fluffy, down-like feel. Neither is best for every product or person.

How they feel

  • Buckwheat hulls shift into place, hold a supportive shape, and have a noticeable rustling sound. They are heavier than kapok.
  • Kapok compresses more readily and can need fluffing or an occasional top-up to maintain loft.

Choose for the actual product

Current Bean Products zafu cushions use buckwheat fill. Kapok is an option in selected pillows and cushions; this comparison does not mean every item is available in both fills. Check the product’s choices before ordering.

Keep both fills dry. When a product has an accessible zipper, follow its instructions to adjust the fill in small amounts.
