How High Should a Shower Curtain Hang?

Updated on Oct 12, 2026

Set the rod height from the actual curtain length and hook drop, not a single standard number. The hem should clear the bathroom floor while the curtain or liner still contains water inside the tub or shower.

Measure before installing

  1. Measure the finished curtain from its hanging points to the bottom edge.
  2. Allow for the distance the hooks hang below the rod.
  3. Choose the floor clearance and inside-tub overlap needed for your setup.
  4. Test the hanging position before fixing the rod permanently.

For a freestanding shower, follow the enclosure’s requirements to avoid a splash gap. Natural fabrics can shrink; follow the product’s advice about washing before final installation. After use, spread the curtain out so it can dry.
