Using hemp mulch and soil products

Hemp hurd mulch helps soil retain moisture, suppresses weeds and gradually breaks down into the soil. Spread it approximately 2 to 3 inches deep around perennials, shrubs and garden paths. Dry hurd is lightweight, so water it after spreading to help keep it in place.

A 25-pound bag contains approximately 3 cubic feet of material. At a depth of 2 inches, one bag covers approximately 18 square feet.

Hemp hurd soil amendment can improve drainage in dense soil and help sandy soil retain moisture. Work it into the soil rather than leaving it entirely on the surface. Because woody material can temporarily use nitrogen as it decomposes, pair it with compost or an appropriate plant fertilizer.

Hemp animal bedding provides an absorbent, low-dust option for chicken coops, nesting areas and stalls. Used bedding can be added to an appropriate compost system after use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Garden & Soil Products FAQ

Can buckwheat hulls be used as mulch?

Yes. Buckwheat hulls have long been used as a lightweight mulch, especially around roses and in containers.

Does hemp mulch change soil pH?

Hemp mulch is close to neutral and should not meaningfully change soil pH under normal garden use.

How long does hemp mulch last?

Usually one to two seasons, depending on rainfall, climate and how thickly it is applied. Check it in spring and add more as needed.
