Fill Calculators

Find the Right Fill and Amount

Whether you’re refreshing a bean bag chair or filling a pillow, cushion or bolster, our calculators can help you estimate how much to buy.

Use the Bean Bag Fill Calculator for polystyrene beads. Use the All Fill Calculator for other projects, selecting your material and intended use.

About Our Fill Materials

  • Polystyrene beads: Lightweight, free-moving fill for bean bag chairs and larger cushions. Sold by cubic volume.
  • Buckwheat hulls: Firm, moldable fill for meditation cushions and smaller support pillows. Larger projects can become very heavy.
  • Kapok fiber: Fluffy natural fiber for pillows and body support. Compresses with use and is poorly suited to firm seating.
  • Hemp fiber: A natural, compressible option for pillows and lighter support.
  • Shredded latex: Springy, compressible pieces for pillows and cushions. These behave differently from a solid latex cushion.
  • Shredded foam: Soft, compressible pieces for pillows and cushions. Supportive projects may need twice the measured volume or more.

How to Use the Calculators

Choose the closest shape and enter its dimensions, or enter the empty container’s known volume. Select your intended use and whether you’re filling an empty cover, doing a substantial refresh or adding a light top-up.

The calculator suggests a starting allowance that you can adjust. Bean bag chairs start at approximately 40% of the measured volume; supportive uses of shredded foam and latex start higher to account for compression.

These are estimates, not guaranteed purchase quantities. Shape, packing, existing fill and preferred firmness affect the result. Add fill gradually. If an estimate seems unusually large or heavy, contact us before ordering.

100% equals the measured volume. 200% means twice that volume of loose fill before compression. Changing fill or intended use resets this starting allowance.
