Meditation Cushions

Meditation cushions built for a practice that happens every day: hemp-covered zafus filled with organic buckwheat hulls, an all-hemp zafu filled with Midwest hemp hurd, hand-tufted hemp zabutons for the knees, and sets that pair them. Hemp is the cover we recommend for a cushion that lives on the floor. It's the strongest natural fiber, it holds odor less than cotton, and it softens with washing instead of wearing out. Handmade in Chicago since 1987.

Zafu, zabuton or both

A zafu is the round cushion you sit on. It lifts your hips above your knees so your spine stacks without effort. A zabuton is the flat mat that goes under it so your knees and ankles rest on padding instead of the floor. Most people who sit daily end up with both; a set is the cheapest way to get there.

What makes a meditation cushion worth buying

Four things, and most cushions sold online fail at least two.

Why hemp

The 17 oz hemp canvas on these cushions is upholstery weight. It takes daily dragging across a floor for years, resists mildew and bacteria on its own, and gets softer every wash. The 100% hemp zafu takes it further: hemp cover, hemp hurd fill, no cotton or buckwheat anywhere, and the only carbon-negative cushion we make. More on the fiber on why hemp.

Not a cushion person

Some knees don't want cross-legged sitting. The folding bamboo meditation bench puts you in a supported kneel with your legs free underneath; the Higher Ground chair is an adjustable-angle seat for people who need a chair but not a chair's posture. Both sit on a zabuton.

Propping under the knees or behind the back solves the same problem from another direction, and our hemp yoga bolsters are cut from the same 17 oz canvas as these cushions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best meditation cushion for a beginner?

A round buckwheat zafu on a standard zabuton. The cotton set if budget matters, the hemp set if it's going to be used daily for years.

How high should a meditation cushion be?

High enough that your knees sit below your hips when cross-legged. That's usually 3 to 5 inches of lift once you're on it. Adjust by adding or removing fill.

Do I need a meditation cushion at all?

Not strictly. A folded blanket works for a few minutes. Past that, the lift a zafu gives is what keeps your back from doing the work. Our take in is a meditation cushion necessary.

Do you make a crescent meditation cushion?

No. The oval organic cotton zafu gives the wider front edge that people want from a crescent, without the gap at the back.

Hemp or cotton?

Hemp if the cushion will be used every day or shared in a studio. Cotton if it's occasional, or if you want the mandala and chakra prints.
