When my Whale arrived, it was already coming apart in multiple places, and this seems to be as much of a design issue as perhaps a warehouse environment issue. I’ll explain this further--but I want to start by mentioning that I did reach out to customer service about this issue, and they offered to have me return the item, so that was good at least. The problem is, this item is large, and the box it came packed in is gigantic (and full of that kind of Styrofoam that comes apart at a slight touch and goes everywhere). The box did not fit in my car, and I did not have a way to get this item to FedEx. It became such a hassle that I decided to just let it go and keep the defective product. (Furthermore, customer service stopped responding when I mentioned preferring a replacement. I was given no acknowledgement nor explanation of how the replacement would be processed.) The Whale is made from layers of bent plywood. On one end of my Whale, the plywood layers arrived separated and bending apart, resulting in cracking of the layers as well. Also, on the top surface, the top layer of plywood is full of air bubbles and around these, more cracks. It seems that either the method of bending the plywood (steam?), or the storage conditions, or perhaps both, have caused this. My husband said he could glue the separating layers back together, but the cracks and bubbles will still remain and be obvious. It will be functional, but still, it’s disappointing for an item this expensive. This is advertised as being a visually appealing apparatus—well, due to having a 2-year-old at home and lots of kid furniture, my house is already full of plywood this-and-that, and I personally don’t mind it. It’s functional, and natural looking. But neither is it especially pleasing. The plywood has plenty of imperfections and discolorations, and this is aside from the defects on my particular Whale that I’ve noted. But again, it’s functional, and way better than plastic. Does it work? Well, I didn’t touch it for a while because I had plans to return it. But now that I’ve resigned myself to keeping this one, I’ve started using it, and I think it might be very beneficial in helping with my spinal alignment in the long run. I also use a Backpod for my costochondritis, and that is a tiny little thing that is very easy to store away—and I have gotten far more immediate relief from my personal back problems by using that. But we all deal with different kinds of back issues and pain, and the best results are not immediate—and so aside from the defects, the Whale is probably worth a try if you think it might help. I just hope you get sent a good one.
